Product highlights and buying context
Built to handle 12K raw video, 8K multi-cam sequences, batch processing of high-res images, and large data sets, the Express 4M2 Ultra Four-Slot Thunderbolt 5 External Storage Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing is designed for DITs and filmmakers, professional video editors, VFX artists, colorists, photographers, professionals, and power users. Equipped with four NVMe M.2 SSD slots, the Express 4M2 Ultra supports four M.2 2242 or 2280 SSDs, with native support for PCIe 4.0 x1, although PCIe 5.0 and 3.0 are also supported. Depending on your choice of SSD, data transfers speeds can reach as high as 6622 MB/s when all four drives are configured as RAID 0, with single drive performance reaching as high as 1600 MB/s. OWC built the Express 4M2 Ultra with a software RAID controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, and 10, each of which provides performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both via included SoftRAID software. For those who do not need a RAID, JBOD is also available.
The Express 4M2 Ultra may be formatted for use with macOS 14 and later, Windows 11, iPadOS, Linux/Ubuntu, and Chrome. It connects to your host system using an 80 Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 port, but is backward compatible with 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 4, 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3, and 40 Gb/s USB4. For system expansion, a second Thunderbolt 5 port lets you daisy-chain five additional Thunderbolt devices, including more Express 4M2 Ultras, plus one USB peripheral. An aluminum enclosure offers rugged protection while keeping the drive cool for improved performance, although additional cooling is provided by a 40mm fan that spins up to 4000 rpm. The Express 4M2 Ultra may also be used as a boot drive, but only on Mac. It is plug-and-play, meaning no drivers are required for use. Included is a Thunderbolt 5 cable, a 90W power supply, and a US power cable.
Start with up to 32TB in a single compact enclosure. When you need more capacity, daisy-chain additional Express 4M2 Ultra units through the second Thunderbolt 5 port to create one huge, unified volume instead of juggling multiple drive letters or splitting projects across locations. Four enclosures give you 128TB and beyond. The second Thunderbolt 5 port also lets you connect up to five additional Thunderbolt devices plus one USB peripheral. Your workspace grows exactly how you need it. Production companies building shared storage arrays and solo creators future-proofing their setup get the same limitless scalability.
Engineered to support almost any NVMe M.2 2280 or 2242 SSD, this compact powerhouse gives you total freedom to choose your preferred brand, capacity and performance level, whether it's bleeding-edge fast PCIe 5.0/4.0 drives or mid-level speed PCIe 3.0 drives you may already own. Add up to a massive 8TB capacity per drive for 32TB total. When tomorrow's 16TB drives hit the market, you can easily boost your Express 4M2 Ultra's capacity without buying a new enclosure. Your storage. Your choice. Your future.
The Express 4M2 Ultra is a fast DIY multiple NVMe SSD enclosure offered by OWC and was purposefully built to harness Thunderbolt 5's 80 Gb/s bandwidth. Experience up to 6622 MB/s performance with your Mac or PC. Connect to Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 systems and still get speeds up to 3200 MB/s. Even Thunderbolt 3 Macs tap into blazing performance. You're never locked out, and you're always ready for your next system upgrade.
In the fast-paced, tight-budget world of filmmaking where time is money, every minute saved is critical. When you're juggling multiple cameras or offloading a variety of media cards simultaneously, you'll keep your production running ahead of schedule by ingesting over twice as fast with Express 4M2 Ultra vs 40 Gb/s storage.
High-performance NVMe drives in RAID configurations generate serious heat. Whether you're rendering 8K footage, ingesting multiple media cards, or running intensive database operations, you get maximum performance without the noise that breaks creative focus or the thermal throttling that kills productivity. The Express 4M2 Ultra's solid aircraft-grade aluminum body provides passive cooling and rugged protection, while a smart adaptive fan quietly activates only during sustained workloads.
More than just great song lyrics, you need to consider which PCIe SSD generation is appropriate for your unique needs. Check out the speeds you can experience when using different generation SSDs in Express 4M2 Ultra.
SoftRAID is a fast and flexible application to configure, maintain, and protect your RAID volumes on Mac and Windows. This OWC enclosure includes 3 years of SoftRAID Premium.
Please note that SoftRAID is licensed per computer.
Please note that Thunderbolt 5 requires macOS 15 and later or Windows 11 and later. Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 require macOS 14 and later. Thunderbolt 3 is only supported on Mac and requires macOS 15 and later. Intel Macs require macOS 15 and later. iPadOS, Chrome/Surface, and Linux systems require the latest version of their OS.
