The base increases the camera's weight and minimizes camera shake while mounted to a head. The handle has a faux-leather tactile grip to improve handling and help you to feel more confident while shooting. Battery access is available through the bottom of the base and a single 1/4"-20 socket allows mounting directly to a conventional tripod head.
