Product highlights and buying context
This Fotohaus Klinger Kit includes the AEA NUVO N8 Far-Field Phantom-Powered Ribbon Microphone along with an adjustable tripod stand and a black 25' Mogami Gold XLR cable, so you can plug-in, power up the mic, and start recording instruments and vocals with the classic sound of a ribbon element. The phantom-powered JFET electronics and custom transformer provide a +12 dB gain increase, allowing the NUVO N8 to work with a wider variety of preamps than many traditional passive ribbon mics with lower output levels.
Offering the open and natural sound of a traditional side-address, large-ribbon mic in a compact and lightweight form factor designed for far-field use, the AEA Ribbon Mics NUVO N8 active ribbon microphone is ideal when positioned 1 to 20' away from the source, be it group vocals, acoustic instruments, ensembles, or drums, in the studio or on the stage. The inclusion of a custom transformer helps the NUVO N8 achieve a strong output level while retaining low-noise performance.
As a far-field ribbon, the NUVO N8 provides full low- and high-end tone when capturing sources in the context of a room. Plus, it boasts the widest frequency range of any AEA mic. The NUVO N8's figure-8 polar pattern exhibits the classic pickup traits and side-rejection qualities associated with ribbon mics. A standard XLR 3-pin male connector is on the mic for hookup to virtually any microphone preamp; 48V phantom power is required to power the mic's active electronics.
The N8 captures a space as it sounds live and in person, with all the present subtlety and nuance. Its expansive frequency response and balanced low-end make it superbly effective when capturing the full breadth of sound from the back of a room, above a drum set, or overhead a string section.
It is designed to be positioned at an ideal distance of 12 inches or farther from the source of sound. This far-field design allows for a wide range of options when positioning the N8 to best capture an instrument within the context of a room.
From as far away as 20 feet away, the N8 retains the low-end frequencies of the sources it captures, and its open, natural tonality makes it perfect to record an entire orchestra or the full low-end of a drum kit from overhead.
The proximity effect of the N8 is present when recording a source from closer than 12 inches, so this feature can be used to accentuate the low-end of a vocal or string instrument. Potential damage from loud sources is of no concern, even at such a short distance, as the N8 can handle 141+ dB SPL at 1 kHz.
If less proximity effect is desired when recording at close range, the near-field AEA N22 is an effective ribbon mic to complement the N8's far-field performance.
